✈️ Mag's August 2026 — Trip Suggestions

Oxford → Canada · 3-4 week visit · Based with Anna (Mississauga) then Mike & Nicola (Claremont) then cottage together

📍 Phase 1 — Mississauga with Mom (Anna)

~Aug 4 to Aug 16 · 2000 The College Way, Mississauga · Mag has a car

⚠️ Camp logistics note: The camps we researched for the kids are all near Claremont/Pickering — 45-60 min from Mississauga. If Annabelle and Antoine go to camp during this phase, it's worth finding camps closer to Mississauga, OR having the kids come stay in Claremont for the week of Aug 10-14. To be confirmed.
Aug 3-4 (Long Weekend Arrival)
🍷
Niagara-on-the-Lake & Niagara Falls
Classic first stop for any UK visitor — wineries, the falls, the gorge walk. About 1.5 hrs from Mississauga. Do the falls for the spectacle, NOTL for the charm and wine. Full day easily.

Aug 14-16 (Ben's Baseball Tournament — Stouffville)
Ben's tournament: Aug 14 (Thu/Fri) through Aug 16 (Sun) in Stouffville. Mike and Nicola may be at games. Stouffville is actually only ~25 min from Mississauga.
Come watch Ben play!
Stouffville is ~25 min from Mom's. A rep baseball tournament is a fun family experience — outdoor, casual, great way to see Ben in action. Antoine and Annabelle would enjoy it too. Could easily do an afternoon game and grab dinner nearby after.

🚗
Use weekend to drive out to Claremont early
Since Stouffville is close to Claremont anyway, Aug 16 (Sun) could be a natural "bridge" day — watch Ben's tournament, then drive out to Mike's for the night to settle in ahead of Monday camp start. Easy, no backtracking.
Transition day ~30 min from Stouffville

🍷 The Case for Camp Week — Adults Time (Aug 17-21)

Kids in camp 9am-4pm every day · Mike + Nicola can take a day or two off · Mag + John free to explore

Why camp week is actually a gift for everyone: The kids get structure, routine, and fun with other kids after weeks of travel. The adults get real couple time — something that's almost impossible to manufacture otherwise. The cottage is a week later — you'll all be more relaxed and recharged going in.
Monday Aug 17 — Kids' first day of camp
Drop-off morning, slow start
Drop the kids off together. Come home for a real breakfast. Four adults, no agenda. This alone will feel like a miracle after weeks of travel chaos.
Adults Chill
🌊
Afternoon: Lake Ontario beach or Petticoat Creek
5 min from the house. Bring a book, enjoy the quiet. Pick the kids up at 4pm together — they'll come home exhausted and happy, full of stories.

Tuesday Aug 19 — Adult day trip (Mike or Nicola takes a day off)
🍷
Prince Edward County — winery day

Wednesday Aug 20 — Mag + John's day (you and Nicola watch the kids after camp)
🌙
Night off for Mag + John — you keep the kids
Offer to take all four kids for the night. Ben and Ellie are already home — adding Annabelle and Antoine is a sleepover they'll all love. Mag and John get a full evening and overnight completely to themselves — dinner, hotel in the city, whatever they want. They haven't had that in years.

💡 General Tips for Mag

🚗
Driving in Ontario
She'll drive on the right — UK license is valid in Ontario for tourists. 400-series highways are fast. Google Maps works perfectly. Parking is easy outside Toronto core.
💳
Money
Canadian dollar is typically favourable for GBP holders. Tap/contactless everywhere. Tipping culture: 18-20% at restaurants.
☀️
August weather
Hot and humid — 25-32°C typically. Some thunderstorm afternoons. Pack sunscreen, light layers for evenings. Very different from Oxford August!
📱
SIM card
Get a Canadian prepaid SIM at the airport or any Walmart/Shoppers Drug Mart. Rogers, Bell, or Telus. Much better than roaming on a UK plan for 3-4 weeks.
